Teaching

I taught courses in college-level academic and technical writing, digital/web design, and specialized writing from 2008 through 2020. I believe that learning in these areas is best demonstrated by doing and creating, so I would create content in each of these domains alongside my students every term.

I taught in three colleges/universities: Ivy Tech Community College from 2008 to 2009, Washington State University from 2010 to 2017, and Oregon Institute of Technology from 2017 to 2021. Each had a very different student body, and I developed skills in working with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.

Basic Writing
  • 0-level, non-credit bearing, writing skills courses. These courses were meant to prepare students for the writing tasks they would perform in their academic/professional programs at Ivy Tech CC.
  • Coursework focused on regular writing production in response to specific prompts or other external needs (weekly short essays or blog posts), occasional production of longer academic work (2-5 page essays), and frequent revision with peers.
Academic Writing, First-Year Writing
  • Introductory writing courses meant for first-year students. These courses prepared students to do research-based writing in their majors.
  • Projects included heavily-revised portfolios of work produced throughout the course (in both 16- and 10-week versions). Work included research-based writing, multimedia adaptations of academic work, and personal opinion essays.
Research-Based Writing
  • Writing course for mid-career students, typically those that have just begun their majors. These courses prepared students to do advanced academic writing and some professional writing in their fields.
  • Projects included several long-form technical reports or synthesis papers, which were researched, written, and revised over 8-10 weeks. Students always wrote about something within their field of study in order to play the Expert role in writing.
Technical and Professional Writing
  • Writing courses for mid- and late-career students. These courses focused on general approaches to writing in technical and professional environments.
  • Depending on course level, projects included either a long-form technical report that was researched, written, and revised over the term or a series of short, professional documents (emails, various report types, documentation, instructions, and more as necessary). Courses were project-based, and students used the writing as part of a problem-solving process.
Grant Writing (Undergraduate, Graduate)
  • Writing courses for late-career or graduate students. These courses dealt with the basics of finding RFPs or other grant opportunities, writing proposals based on RFPs, and writing unsolicited proposals to donors or other supporters.
  • Projects included two grant proposals or other funding-request documents (e.g. crowdfunding campaigns or scholarship materials), with expectations varying by course level. Students would regularly complete large portions of NIH, NSF, and DOE grant proposals to support senior/graduate projects.
Digital Media Design
  • Software courses delivered as part of a major focus program or general in-major elective. Courses developed foundational skill in multimedia design software, typically the Adobe Creative Suite/Creative Cloud, or online publishing tools, like WordPress.
  • Projects included full websites, video, graphic design, and booklets.
